Social Fabric Research started as an opportunity to share a bit of fluffy joy on life adventures. Ever wondered how fluff rolling on a critter in the field becomes cozy thread? This work explores soil-to-soil processing steps from the raw fleece to the spinning wheel to finished fabrics that fit people of all body types and colors. Together let’s love and care for each other.

Christen (they/them) is founder and host of Social Fabric Research, utilizing textile arts to create wearable art pieces from the local earth for over 25 years, starting with a crochet hook and knitting needles with their grandma, and fascinating on the spinning wheel that “came over on a boat” several generations ago. They work with wools, dyes, and fibers grown in Minnesota’s fibershed, designing with sustainable carbon footprint and restoring healthy ecological relationships.

At Social Fabric Research, the goal is community and sustainability. Every one of the handmade pieces is joyfully handspun and handmade using original designs, local fibers, and sustainable dyes on unceded Očhéthi Šakówiŋ and Wahpekute lands. Let’s get cozy creating relationships and drape ourselves in generations of textile wisdom to thrive here with one another joyfully.

Join us in keeping textiles local, from soil to soil. One big goal: Restorative land and resource stewardship, including carbon negative textiles that work for rugged outdoor adventures.
