Raising and Finishing Lambs on Sheep-Specific Pasture Types in a Rotational Grazing System

  • 63326 300th Street Gibbon, MN, 55335 United States (map)

This field day, which will be hosted by Keith and Anna Johnson of Blissful Bee Pastures, will be an opportunity to share results from their project studying ways to maintain average daily gains in lambs on pasture through the hot summer months with the goal of finishing lambs on pasture in the growing season. The pasture types they designed include a diverse annual pasture with more than 20 plant species, a non-lignifying pasture with a heavy chicory/ladino clover component, and a self-harvested grain finishing pasture with oats and alfalfa/grass mix.

For the project, these pasture, along with a perennial pasture, were rotationally-grazed by their split flock of sheep and average daily gains and pounds gained per acre compared. The field day will include a presentation on the theory behind their project, results to date, and a pasture walk to observe the sheep and the different pasture types.

This project was funded by a Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant competitively awarded through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Program.
